Lewis has been acting since he was five years old. He started off with minor roles in television programmes, debuting in Some Kind of Life. He then went on to play Neville Longbottom in the eight Harry Potter films.
Shot prior to the release of Deathly Hallows, Lewis played the reporter in the independent film The Sweet Shop. Lewis played the character Jamie Bradley in a five-part TV series called The Syndicate written by Kay Mellor, which was broadcast on BBC One in spring of 2012.
In July 2012, Lewis appeared in a music video called Filth by A Band of Buriers; Matthew co-starred with actress Lily Loveless, who together, portrayed boyfriend and girlfriend in the video. Quotations:
"You don't have to be a Brad Pitt look-alike hero just to be courageous and help out your friends and come through when it really matters. I think everyone can sort of relate to that in some way, particularly back to people's school days."
"I was a short, chubby kid, pretty shy."
"The fame stuff, the kind words from websites and things, are very flattering and lovely, but I just wanna act."
"I wasn't attractive when I was growing up, and I don't think I am now."
"You can stay true to yourself and your friends, you can do the right thing, you can do with your life whatever you want to. I think that's a lovely message."
Membership
Lewis is a vice-president of the Leeds Rugby Foundation charity.

Personality
For his role as Neville, Lewis wore yellow and crooked false teeth (though only in Prisoner of Azkaban), a fat suit, two-sizes-too-big shoes and had plastic bits placed behind his ears in order to make them stick out more. He was also under contract not to fix his naturally crooked teeth until filming was completed. This was done to give the character a more awkward and "geeky" appearance. Lewis has spoken out against this treatment in interviews, claiming that while it no longer bothers him, having to take on a purposefully unattractive appearance on a film set full of attractive girls his age whilst going through puberty was "rubbish".
Lewis has described his association with the number 11 and how it has appeared multiple times throughout his life. For example, he was 11 years old when obtaining the role for Harry Potter, he has a tattoo of the number 11 on his right arm, and he also owns clothing with the number 11 on them.
He prefers dogs over cats.
Matthew has a phobia of spiders.
His pet peeve is when a little tea is left at the bottom of the flask.
Physical Characteristics:
During the filming of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Helena Bonham Carter, who portrays the character Bellatrix Lestrange, accidentally ruptured Lewis's eardrum when she stuck her wand in his ear.
