Matthew Link is a journalist, editor, and filmmaker. But above all, Matthew was destined to be a travel writer, having grown up on his father's 52-foot sailboat during his teenage years, cruising around Southeast Asia and the Pacific, living in several island nations. This adventurous era he wrote about in the story The Unquenchable Sea, which was featured in the book Best Travel Writing 2008.
While living on the Big Island of Hawaii as an adult, Matthew wrote The Rainbow Handbook Hawaii, one of the most successful guidebooks ever published in its category. Matthew has contributed to three other guidebook series (Access, Fodor's, and Frommers) and chapters to five book anthologies. He has at various times called England, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, Hawaii, and New Zealand home as well as having traveled to 60 countries and Antarctica.
For a number of years, Matthew worked personally with the iconic Arthur Frommer (the founder of the first modern guidebook series) as an editor at Budget Travel magazine. Matt has also been an editor at Men's Journal and Sherman's Travel magazines, and he is currently the Editor At Large (and former Editorial Director) for The Out Traveler magazine. In addition, Matthew has written articles for Newsweek, Time, Forbes, Conceirge.com, MSNBC, TravelandLeisure, USA Today, MSN, Men's Health, Men's Fitness, Business Traveler International, Real Simple, and Cooking Light. Quotations:
“I have been traveling since I was a child. To me, travel is completely spiritual. Visiting other countries, places, and people is like stepping out of yourself and into another time and space. The differences between peoples are monumental, as are the misunderstandings. To me, traveling and exploring our planet make you appreciative of how many worlds we live in. There are many stories and places that are never heard. This feeling of limitless potential and of forgotten songs is what invigorates my writing."
Personality
Matthew's favorite destination in the world is Africa, which he has visited eight times and written extensively about. Matthew is also an avid outdoorsman, skydiver, paraglider, kayaker, yachtsman, water-skier, hiker, snowboarder, and skin diver. He speaks Spanish, French, and Chinese.
