(Excerpt from The Story of the Revised New Testament: Amer...)
Excerpt from The Story of the Revised New Testament: American Standard Edition It was necessary in telling this story to begin at the inception of the movement for Revision. Hence this little book repeats many facts that were published when, and immediately after, the Revised New Testa ment of 1881 appeared. But another gener ation has grown up since that date, and much well known to Biblical scholars will be new to most readers to - day. Yet, even in telling of the labors before 1881, the writer, from his connection with the American Company of New Testament Revisers, has been able to include many facts not known to the general public. The account of the preparation of the Standard Edition of the American Revised New Testament has never been published before, and the writer has found, from many letters of inquiry, that little is known about the details. The same inquiries indicate a desire to learn the facts as here briefly presented. Thirty-five years have passed since the work began, and this sketch has been penned in the desire and hope of making these long years of labor. (This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Matthew Brown Riddle was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of David H. Riddle and Elizabeth Blaine (Brown), daughter of Matthew Brown, president of Jefferson College.
Endowed with a superior mind, under the favorable influences of his home he developed rapidly and in 1852, at the age of sixteen, graduated from Jefferson College. From 1853 to 1855 he was a student in Western Theological Seminary, Pittsburgh.
In 1860-61 he studied abroad.
An untiring and fearless student, he attained high rank among the scholars and teachers of his day.
For a brief period, he was adjunct professor of Greek at Jefferson. He then enrolled for the senior year's work at the theological seminary of the Reformed Dutch Church, New Brunswick, New Jersey, graduated from that institution in 1859, and in May of that year was licensed to preach by the Classis of Bergen.
In 1861 he became chaplain of the 2nd New Jersey Volunteers, but ill health soon terminated his service. On April 15, 1862, he was ordained to the ministry by the Classis of Bergen and assumed the pastorate of the First Reformed Church, Hoboken, New Jersey.
From 1865 to 1869 he was pastor of the Second Reformed Church, Newark, New Jersey, resigning in the latter year to go abroad for further study.
In 1871 he was elected professor of New Testament exegesis at Hartford (Connecticut) Theological Seminary, serving in that capacity until 1887, when he accepted a similar position in in Western Theological Seminary, where he later became president of the faculty. In 1911 he was made professor emeritus with the privilege of continuing his lectures in New Testament criticism.
He was a member of the American committee on the revision of the New Testament, and was one of the editors of the American version.
He died at Edgeworth, Pennsylvania.
A prolific writer, he constantly contributed articles to religious periodicals and encyclopedias. He edited several of the New Testament books for Philip Schaff's A Commentary on the Holy Scriptures, the American edition of John P. Lange's work, and contributed to other of Schaff's publications; he also edited the gospels of Mark and Luke for the American edition of H. A. W. Meyer's commentary on the New Testament; his editorial services in connection with other standard works were extensive. For many years he contributed notes on the New Testament lessons of the International Sunday School series.
