1882 graduate Faculty of History and Philology, Moscow University.
From 1901 professor, 1911-1917 rector, Moscow University. Simultaneously lecturer, Moscow Higher Women's Courses. From 1913 chairman, Moscow Historical Social of Russian Antiquities.
1917-1929 correspondent member, Russian Academy of Sciences. As a pupil of V. O. Klyuchevskiy was classified by Soviet authorities as a historian of the “bourgeios legal school". Specialzed in the history of the Grand Principality of Lith (Medieval Belorussian and Lith).
Also studied the history of Muscovite Russia and historiography. 1931-1936 worked at Bashkir Research Institute of National Culture, Ufa. Wrote many still-valid works.
