Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(Chaucer swere the only pilgrims to woo the Canterbury way...)
Chaucer swere the only pilgrims to woo the Canterbury way with stories, nor that theirs was the only road by which to seek the Head of Thomas. His people may have set the fashion and himself a tantalizing standard of attainment; but that is a poor-hearted chronicler who withholds from a tale because some other has told one well. I have here the diversions of a devout sodality, which followed Chaucer sand in point of time (remember) at no such long interval. Their journey, however, took longer to perform, their tales (for reasons which I am not bound to divulge, and shall not) were reported in the common speech of us all. At least in the matter of roads whether Canterbury or entertainment be the end our primum mobile may not engross the market. The main stream of piety was no more his than was London the well-head of England. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) (Excerpt from Extemporary Essays Certainly, the parent of...)
Excerpt from Extemporary Essays Certainly, the parent of the Essay draped no maypoles with speech. Montaigne was a sedentary philosopher, of the order of the post-prandials; a wine-and-walnuts man. One thing would open out into another, and one seem better than the other, at the time of hearing. 'Je n'enseigne point; je raconte,' he tells you of himself; and it is true. To listen to him is a liberal education; yet you can hardly think of Montaigne footing it on the green. Bacon's line, again, was the aphoristic. He shreds off his maypole rather than clothes it: but he has one set up. He can give his argument as witty a turn as the Frenchman when he pleases - 'There is no man doth a wrong for the wrong's sake, but thereby to purchase himself profit, or pleasure, or honour, or the like. Therefore why should I be angry with a man for loving himself better than me?' That is the turn his thoughts take upon Revenge, and a fair sample of his way with an abstract idea - shredding off it all the time, getting down to the pith. But he can be very obscure: 'A single life doth well with Churchmen; for charity will hardly water the ground where it must first fill a pool.' That is proleptic reasoning. We are to caper about the pole before the ornaments are on. But since his time the Maypole has gone out of use. The modern essayist has had a column reared for him instead, which he is required, not to drape, but to fill. That kind of column is no symbol of the earth's fertility, but too often the grave of it. It has been, however, the opportunity of the babbler, the prater, the prattler, and the agreeable rattle: all's one to the Column so that it be filled. You may write on something, or nothing; you may grind axes on your column, or roll logs on it. But you must fill it. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. This means that we have checked every single page in every title, making it highly unlikely that any material imperfections – such as poor picture quality, blurred or missing text - remain. When our staff observed such imperfections in the original work, these have either been repaired, or the title has been excluded from the Leopold Classic Library catalogue. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, within the book we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Europe but my own, a country where respect for things in being is carried to the other side of idolatry, and where, at the same time, you may see men, and even communities of men, run headlong down steep places to destruction in pursuit of abstract ideas, and win in the ridiculous act the admiration and respect of those to whom the ideas themselves are shocking. AB riton, you admit, reveres established order, fears God, honours the King, loves his father and mother, c. So he does. (This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1904. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VIII OF TROY, OF FIESOLE, AND ROME Favoleggiava con la sua famiglia Dei Trojani, di Fiesole, e di Roma. 15 Par. 126. If the apple of Eve sent men out into Asia, it was Helen's fruit that filled Europe with heroes. For when tall Troy went down, and The stock of the scamper began, both of them who Troy' ran home, and of them who ran from it, the progeny of Priam travelled far and wide, seeking friendly soil; and wherever they settled--such was their inalienable prerogative--they became kings. This is why Hector is the favourite above Achilles, and both Chaucer and Shakespeare sided with Troilus against Diomede, because, in a sense, we are all nephews of these peers. Thus were Germany, France, England provided with rulers, but not Fiesole. Fiesole declared herself older than the oldest. The grandfather of the man who first built Troy was Atlas, king of Fiesole. This is a proud arrogation. Rome was contented with Ascanius, Siena with Remus, Padua with Antenor, Venice with Priam the younger--Trojans all and good men; as for Florence, a friend of Julius Caesar was honourable parent enough. But for Fiesole nothing would do but the root of the whole world's title, the very well-spring of the Fountain of Honour. This is as if a man were to claim descent, not from Adam, but from the worm who made fecund the soil whereof God made him. Dante's housewife of the old fashion, spinning her yarn and wondrous genealogies together, had much to say of those great days when nations walked the fair fields of earth on two legs apiece, choosing where they should settle, and beget, and have kingdoms. This was the round of it--how the sons of King Atlas went to the East and reared up Troy, then (being scattered by the Greeks) his grandsons came back and made a greater Troy...

A sturdy tale of Norse days and the long career of Thorgils, a positive youth who grew into a man of action. He sailed on an expedition with Eric the Red and was shipwrecked. His party spent two years on an island, where some of his thralls revolted and killed his wife. But these wild circumstances had their ending; Thorgils returned to his own country and was acknowledged great even by those who had grown powerful in his absence. –Publishers Weekly, Volume 91

Not illustrated. 1904 edition. Excerpt: ...routed; a part was cut to pieces, a part fled home to the hill. The Romans sat down before the city, built and trenched a camp, and sending to Rome for Julius Caesar, Cicero and others, awaited the starvation of the enemy. But this did not occur; the Faesulans had stout hearts, the Romans wearied, many returned to Rome, and of these Cicero may well have been one. The noble Fiorino and his company remained. That entrenched camp which he had made became old, square Florence; and if he himself did not give name to the city, flowers of some sort did. "For," as my author says, " Fiorino died in that very spot, who was of chivalry the flower; and in the place and in the fields about it for ever sprang flowers and lilies. Wherefore the greater number of the inhabitants agreed to call their city Floria, as if it had been built up among flowers, that is, among many delightful things." This is a charming story, which gives one as much insight into the good Villani as into Florentine beginnings. Then there is Benvenuto Cellini's account, I think, the best of all. That immortal ruffian says directly that Fiorino was his lineal ancestor. His name in full was Fiorino da Cellino. It is quite true, he allows, that Fiorino's quarters Benvenuto's were on the site of the present city, account. l3ut lg name was given to it in a more natural way. His friends in the army, having frequent occasion to consult him upon matters of business or pleasure, got into the way of saying, whenever any difficulty arose, "Let us go down to Fiorino's," "Andiamo a Fiorino." Therefore, when it came to giving a local name to this new Rome, no better occurred to Caesar than Fiorenze, which is, as we should say, "Fiorino's place." So...
