(One cold February morning in 1913, a 64-year-old woman kn...)
One cold February morning in 1913, a 64-year-old woman known as Nance Dude led her granddaughter, Roberta Putnam, out of their home in western North Carolina and up the side of a mountain. She returned without the child later that day. What could drive an old woman to murder her granddaughter? Maurice Stanley has reconstructed the sad, dark story of Nance Dude from newspaper articles, court and prison records, and talks with mountain people who either remember Nance's crime or learned of it from their elders.

(Is there a God? Do we have souls? Are some actions right ...)
Is there a God? Do we have souls? Are some actions right and others wrong? Does prayer work? Is thinking no more than physical brain activity? Is everything physical? The contemporary naturalists - Daniel Dennett and the rest - believe in a purely physical universe ruled by deterministic laws of cause and effect. They deny everything supernatural, especially God, and since they are determinists, they reject human free will, which naturally leads them to reject human moral responsibility. They feel it their duty to discourage or eliminate, or even outlaw, all ethical and religious language.

Maurice F. Stanley was born on January 22, 1945, in Newport, Tennessee, United States. He is the son of Claude L. and Louise J. Stanley.
Maurice Stanley began his studies at North Carolina State University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1967. Then he obtained a Master of Arts degree in 1973 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1976, both at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Maurice Stanley is a writer who has made a teaching career in the field of philosophy. He was a lecturer in the philosophy and religion department at the University of North Carolina Wilmington from 1990 till 2007. He was also a visiting scholar at various public libraries in North Carolina.
His best-known novel is The Legend of Nance Dude originally published in 1991 and based on legends of his family roots in mountainous Heywood County, North Carolina. But in the book, he tackled other topics, too. It was adapted as a play and performed at public libraries throughout North Carolina.
Sorrows End (2009), which might be called a non-fiction novel, followed one of his ancestors, who rode with Jesse James and was involved in one of the largest prison escapes in Tennessee history. Midwinter (2008) retold the mountain legend of Frankie Silver, hanged for her husband's murder, while Sweet Marie (2016) recreated the world of Marie Laveau, the voodoo queen of New Orleans. Stanley's The Lights of Home and Other Stories is a collection of twelve stories, some of which are autobiographical. His most recent book is Essays on Ethics and Politics (2021) written with his wife Glana Stanley.

Quotations: "Since childhood, I have loved books. They are a contribution to the world and, if they are any good, they are a way to conquer death."
Maurice Stanley is a member of the American Philosophical Association and Bradley Society.
Maurice Stanley married Glana Hooper on December 24, 1968.
