Entered army, 1892; Captain, 1900. Served with Devon Regiment through relief of Ladysmith and on column work afterwards (medal and 7 clasps). D. Assistant-Adjutant-General Intelligence, in South Africa, 1900-1902.
Selected to assist in writing official History of Boer War. Toured South Africa for this purpose with the late Colonel G. F. Henderson, Companion of the Bath. Writer of much of first three volumes, and sole author of fourth volume.
Present at engagements at Mooi River, Colenso, Spion Kop, Vaal Krantz, capture of Cingolo and Monte Cristo, Pieter’s Hill, Alleman’s Nek, and many minor affairs. Attached to War Office, 1903-1906, and Committee of Imperial Defence, 1907-1909.
