My story will take you into times and spaces alike rude and uncivil. Blood will be spilt, virgins suffer distresses; the horn will sound through woodland glades; dogs, wolves, deer, and men, Beauty and the Beasts, will tumble each other, seeking life or death with their proper tools. There should be mad work, not devoid of entertainment. When you read the word Explicit, if you have laboured so far, you will know something of Morgraunt Forest and the Countess Isabel; the Abbot of Holy Thorn will have postured and schemed (with you behind the arras); you will have wandered with Isoult and will know why she was called La Desirous, with Prosper le Gai, and will understand how a man may fall in love with his own wife.

(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(Excerpt from The Fool Errant The top-heavy, four-horsed,...)
Excerpt from The Fool Errant The top-heavy, four-horsed, yellow old coach from Vicenza, which arrived at Padua every night of the year, brought with it in particular on the night of October 13, 1721, a tall, personable young man, an Englishman, in a dark blue cloak, who swang briskly down from the coupe and asked in stilted Italian for "La sapienza del Signor Dottor' Lanfranchi." From out of a cloud of steam - for the weather was wet and the speaker violently hot - a husky voice replied, "Eccomi - eccomi, a servirla." The young man took off his hat and bowed. "Have I the honour to salute so much learning?" he asked courteously. "Let me present myself to my preceptor as Mr. Francis Strelley of Upcote." "His servant," said the voice from the cloud, "and servant of his illustrious father. Don Francis, be accommodated; let your mind be at ease. Your baggage? These fellows are here for it. Your valise? I carry it. Your hand? I take it. Follow me." These words were accompanied by action of the most swift and singular kind. Mr. Strelley saw two porters scramble after his portmanteaux, had his valise rest from his hand, and that hand firmly grasped before he could frame his reply. (Webster's edition of this classic is organized to expose ...)
Webster's edition of this classic is organized to expose the reader to a maximum number of synonyms and antonyms for difficult and often ambiguous English words that are encountered in other works of literature, conversation, or academic examinations. Extremely rare or idiosyncratic words and expressions are given lower priority in the notes compared to words which are ¿difficult, and often encountered¿ in examinations. Rather than supply a single synonym, many are provided for a variety of meanings, allowing readers to better grasp the ambiguity of the English language, and avoid using the notes as a pure crutch. Having the reader decipher a word's meaning within context serves to improve vocabulary retention and understanding. Each page covers words not already highlighted on previous pages. If a difficult word is not noted on a page, chances are that it has been highlighted on a previous page. A more complete thesaurus is supplied at the end of the book; synonyms and antonyms are extracted from Webster's Online Dictionary.

(This historic book may have numerous typos and missing te...)
This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1904. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VIII OF TROY, OF FIESOLE, AND ROME Favoleggiava con la sua famiglia Dei Trojani, di Fiesole, e di Roma. 15 Par. 126. If the apple of Eve sent men out into Asia, it was Helen's fruit that filled Europe with heroes. For when tall Troy went down, and The stock of the scamper began, both of them who Troy' ran home, and of them who ran from it, the progeny of Priam travelled far and wide, seeking friendly soil; and wherever they settled--such was their inalienable prerogative--they became kings. This is why Hector is the favourite above Achilles, and both Chaucer and Shakespeare sided with Troilus against Diomede, because, in a sense, we are all nephews of these peers. Thus were Germany, France, England provided with rulers, but not Fiesole. Fiesole declared herself older than the oldest. The grandfather of the man who first built Troy was Atlas, king of Fiesole. This is a proud arrogation. Rome was contented with Ascanius, Siena with Remus, Padua with Antenor, Venice with Priam the younger--Trojans all and good men; as for Florence, a friend of Julius Caesar was honourable parent enough. But for Fiesole nothing would do but the root of the whole world's title, the very well-spring of the Fountain of Honour. This is as if a man were to claim descent, not from Adam, but from the worm who made fecund the soil whereof God made him. Dante's housewife of the old fashion, spinning her yarn and wondrous genealogies together, had much to say of those great days when nations walked the fair fields of earth on two legs apiece, choosing where they should settle, and beget, and have kingdoms. This was the round of it--how the sons of King Atlas went to the East and reared up Troy, then (being scattered by the Greeks) his grandsons came back and made a greater Troy...

Let me refer the reader who cares for such a little matter to Earthwork out of Tuscany, 3rd edition, P-'35 VOL. II O succeed in getting the kind of daedal illusion which pure Gothic gives you by more lawful means; but of course you get none of the mystery of Gothic. The Sienese did, in fact, by outlining in paint and coloured stone what the French did by masses and forms. The effect is nothing so good; it is enormously heavy; but it is an effect, a strong effect, and, incredible as it may seem, a Gothic effect.1 Lovers of the Queen of heaven, they have not been able to build her a house; but have they painted her portrait? Assuredly they have tried, as never lover yet, to show her to us as she showed herself to them, without spot, utterly kind, of peerless beauty, yet a crowned queen. To see Sienese paintings is to have no doubt of this. Their Madonnas have a beauty not of this world; but their paintings are not pictures. The gallery at Siena is evidence of love, but not of art. Just as a doting husband will dress his wife delightfully, hang her little person with jewels and chains, and set a crown upon her empty little head, and 1 For one instance out of many of unlawful practice, take the line of popes' heads under the clerestory windows; what is that but a way of embossing? But to emboss a building with popes' heads which cannot even be seen for what they are, is more than unlawful--is outrageous. The culmination of busyness, overlaying and overdoing, is to be sought in the Ficcolomini Library, whose frescoes, if they were not gilt, would be nothing. It is as if one were to keep one's books in a jewel-case. with every ounce of value he puts on her will be spending and a...

That immortal ruffian says directly that Fiorino was his lineal ancestor. His name in full was Fiorino da Cellino. It is quite true, he allows, that Fiorino's quarters Benvenuto's were on the site of the present city, account. l3ut lg name was given to it in a more natural way. His friends in the army, having frequent occasion to consult him upon matters of business or pleasure, got into the way of saying, whenever any difficulty arose, "Let us go down to Fiorino's," "Andiamo a Fiorino." Therefore, when it came to giving a local name to this new Rome, no better occurred to Caesar than Fiorenze, which is, as we should say, "Fiorino's place." So...
