Creative writing lecturer University California, Riverside, 1984-1991, assistant professor creative writing, 1991-1994, associate professor creative writing, 1995-1997, professor creative writing, 1997—2010, professor emeritus, since 2010. Visiting poet University Redlands, 1987-1989, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, 1991-1997. Visiting professor University Lund, Sweden, 2000.

Visiting artist American Academy, Rome, 2002.
