Graduate Gatchina Aviation School. 1935 graduate Air Force Engineer Academy.
From age 16 worked at a factory. During World War 1 served as an aerial observer. Fought in Civil War; 1922-1925 worked at Moscow Aviation School.
From 1925 flew for Centr Asian airline. 1929 worked in Yakutia. In same year searched for crew of missing American plane and accompanied bodies back to United States.
Explored northern Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics, undertaking a footmarch from the mouth of the Anabara River to Dudinka during which he mapped the shoreline and discovered new islands. 1934 helped to rescue crew of Steamship “Chelyuskin” after it was crushed in an ice-floe in the Bering Straits. From 1935 member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Central Executive Committee.
