Handelman attended Catlin Gabel School, graduating in 1991. He received his bachelor"s degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1995, where he was a member of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity and received an Master of Business Administration degree from University of California, Los Angeles in 2003.
He wrote the book (with co-author Erik Barmack) Why Fantasy Football Matters: (And Our Lives Do Not). He was raised in a Jewish household. After a short stint as an investment banker, Handelman became a director at News Corporation, where he helped to launch Fox Sports" fantasy football division.
Handelman and Barmack also collaborated on a weblog covering the Portland Trail Blazers entitled Beyond Bowie.
In addition to his sports-related work, Handelman is a partner in a film production company Productions, whose first film, Surrogates, was released in 2009.
