Max Kennedy was educated at Phillips Academy and at Moses Brown School in Providence, Rhode Island, from where he graduated in 1983.
He studied American history at Harvard College, where he also was a member of the Spee Club of Harvard University, a Final Club.
In 1992 he graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law. He was elected president of the Student Legal Forum there, like his uncle and his father, who also served as presidents of the Student Legal Forum.
Max Kennedy is a well-known author. He is the author of Danger's Hour: The Story of the USS Bunker Hill and the Kamikaze Pilot Who Crippled Her, which was released by Simon & Schuster on Veterans Day (November 11, 2008). The book garnered praise from filmmaker Ken Burns, journalist Tom Brokaw, and historians Walter Isaacson, Doris Kearns Goodwin, and Stanley Karnow. His book Make Gentle the Life of This World: The Vision of Robert F. Kennedy and the Words That Inspired Him became a best-seller.
He is also known for his work with documentary filmmaker Randolph Bell, by his writing, producing, and directing a documentary on the use of suicide as a weapon of war. His articles have appeared in DoubleTake Magazine, Conde Nast Traveller, and Escape Magazine.
Kennedy began his law career as an assistant district attorney in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1992. He served as a Director of the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial, Mr. Kennedy has led human rights missions to Haiti, South Africa, and Kenya.
He is also known as a co-founder of the Urban Ecology Institute at Boston College.

Kennedy was nominated by President Obama to serve as a Member of the Board of the Directors of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) on January 26, 2011. He was sworn into office by Elizabeth Littlefield, the President of OPIC in November 2011, and received a Security Clearance. Kennedy served on the Board until January 2018.

2008Max Kennedy was baptized by Monsignor William McCormack in Manhattan's St. Patrick's Cathedral, in front of a crowd of 200 people. He is named after General Maxwell D. Taylor, then serving as the American Ambassador to Vietnam, who did not attend the baptism.
Kennedy was interested in public affairs but has never run for public office. He has been involved as a field organizer in many programs and campaigns. For the first time, he was a field organizer for the first congressional campaign of Joseph Patrick Kennedy II in 1986, where he organized wards in Allston and Brighton. In 2000 he participated in the organization of the re-election campaign for Senator Edward M. Kennedy. He also has volunteered on a number of other campaigns, including the presidential campaigns of Edward M. Kennedy in 1980; Michael Dukakis in 1988; Al Gore in 2000; John Kerry in 2004, and as a surrogate for Barack Obama in 2008.
