Max Lee Lucado was born on January 11, 1955, in San Angelo, Texas, United States. He is the son of Jack Terrell and Thelma Esther (Kincaide) Lucado.
Lucado received his education from Abilene Christian University, graduating from it with Bachelor of Science degree in 1977. He then also received his master's degree from it in 1981.
Lucado was ordained in Church of Christ and started working there as an associate minister in 1979. Three years later, he went to Brazil, where he was a missionary in Rio de Janeiro till 1988.
Since 1988, Lucado has been serving the Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas and also working as a freelance writer of religious fiction and nonfiction. He is also a lecturer on a daily radio program.
Lucado has become a familiar name on the bestseller lists in the Christian book category, with numerous volumes of meditations and allegorical stories. Lucado is also the author of a number of works for children, including Just in Case You Ever Wonder, The Children of the King, and Alabaster’s Song: Christmas through the Eyes of an Angel and many others.
In addition to his works for children, Lucado has penned highly successful story books targeted at all ages. Tell Me the Story, published in 1992 and illustrated by Ron DiCianni, is a book of Bible stories to be read aloud by an adult to a child. Its 1993 sequel, Tell Me the Secrets: Treasures for Eternity, also features illustrations by DiCianni and tells the story of a retired missionary who shares a book of spiritual wisdom with three children. His other works include Fearless, God Is With You Every Day, Anxious for Nothing: Finding Calm in a Chaotic World, Unshakable Hope: Building Our Lives on the Promises of God, You Are Special, You'll Get Through This: Hope and Help for Your Turbulent Times, God Will Use This for Good: Surviving the Mess of Life, Trade Your Cares for Calm, God Always Keeps His Promises: Unshakable Hope for Kids, One God, One Plan, One Life: A 365 Devotional, Pocket Prayers: 40 Simple Prayers that Bring Peace and Rest as well as many others.
Lucado has written about 100 books with 100 million copies in print. He was recipient of the Charles "Kip" Jordon Gold Medallion Christian Book of the Year award three times for his books Just Like Jesus, In the Grip of Grace and When God Whispers Your Name), and has also appeared regularly on several bestseller lists including the New York Times Best Seller List.
Lucado was named "America's Pastor" by Christianity Today magazine and in 2005 was named by Reader's Digest as "The Best Preacher in America." He has also been featured on The Fox News Channel, NBC Nightly News, Larry King Live, LLBN, and USA Today. He has been a featured speaker at the National Prayer Breakfast.
