When a factory worker is mysteriously killed by a robot, cybernetics engineer Eleanor McGuire is unwilling to call the incident "human error." In a different part of Osaka, four teenagers are electrocuted in an apparent group suicide, and Police Inspector Ishihara isn't convinced it was self-inflicted. When their investigations cross paths, the foreign scientist and the aging cop find a trail that will lead them to more murders, corporate crime, and a strange online cult led by a secretive guru who promises immortality to his followers if they help him destroy civilization. But how can McGuire and Ishihara stop this psychopath if he doesn't seem to exist?

Maxine McArthur was born on July 4, 1945, in Australia.
Maxine McArthur attended Australian National University. Later she went to Japan where she studied at Osaka University and received a Bachelor of Arts degree. She also attended the Kyoto Municipal University of Arts where she received a Master of Arts degree.
Maxine McArthur started her career as a teacher of English in private kindergarten, in Osaka. She held this post from 1984 to 1986. She also worked as a teacher of English in private language schools in Osaka. From 1989 to 1995 she worked as a teacher at Kobe Women's Junior College. In 1996, she returned to Australia and started to work at Australian National University as a research assistant. McArthur worked as a Part-time tutor in Japanese from 1997 to 1998.
Maxine McArthur published her first novel, Time Future, in 1999. Her next two novels appeared in 2002 and 2004. She also wrote a number of short stories and articles, appeared at Brisbane and Tasmanian Writers Festivals. In 2002, She published her book, Historical Dictionary of Japanese Science and Technology.
Maxine McArthur is an Australian writer who is famous for her fiction novels, such as Time Future and Less Than Human. In 1999, she received the George Turner Award, for Time Future. She also received the Locus Award in 2000. In 2004, her novel Less Than Human won the Aurealis Award for the best science fiction novel. In 2005, she received the Ditmar Award.
