Career
Woodhull entered the army in 1862 at the rank of captain. He was the son of United States Navy officer Maxwell Woodhull who led the United States Ship Cimarron and later died of an accidental gun discharge during the Civil War. Woodhull received his appointment as brevet brigadier general dated to March 13, 1865.
He was largely responsible for bringing George Washington University to its present location.
