Nzewi was born on October 21, 1938 in Nnewi, Anambra, Nigeria; the son of Daniel Chukwumezie Nzewi and Priscilla Mgbanu Nzewi.
Nzewi entered the University of Nigeria in 1961. He received a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from Queens University in 1977.
Nzewi began his career as a music producer at the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation in 1965. A year later he took a position of a senior research fellow and lecturer at the Institute of African Studies at the University of Nigeria. Since 2000 Meki has been a professor of African music in the Department of Music at the University of Pretoria. Also since 2004 he has served as a founder and program director of the Centre for Indigenous Instrumental Music Practices of Africa.
Meki Emeka Nzevi has a forty-six-year experience of teaching African indigenous musical arts theory and performance practice, as well as thirty-two years of field and practical studies of the underlying philosophies, principles and creative theory in the indigenous African musical arts - music, dance, drama, plastic arts, aesthetics and presentation - all commonly inter-structured in conception, creativity and performance-practices. He is also an interactive researcher in the modern study and practice of African music in Europe for fifteen years.
