Mel Ramsden studied at Nottingham College of Art from 1961 to 1963, then went to Australia in 1963 and studied at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School from 1963 to 1964.
After graduating, Ramsden lived in London, United Kingdom from 1964 to 1967. He moved to New York City in 1967.
Mel Ramsden was with Ian Burn co-founder of Art Press in 1969.
He has had several gallery and museum exhibitions, including at the Gallery Kadel Willborn and at the Galerie Grita Insam. He participated in the documenta 5 in Kassel with the project "Index 0001" in the department "idea + idea / light". Ramsden was also represented at Documenta 6 in 1977, Documenta 7 in 1982 and Documenta X in 1997.
He was the participant of the group exhibitions, including "Art and Language" at the Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac in Paris, France in 2008, "Eastinternational 2009" at the Raster Gallery in Poland, Warsaw in 2009, and "Letters to the Red Krayola" at the Gallery Kadel Willborn in Düsseldorf, Germany in 2013.
Mel Ramsden was co-founder of the Society for Arts and Theoretical Analysis in New York City in 1969. He was also a member of the art group "Art & Language" in 1971.
