Drafted into the army at the beginning of World War II. Infantry soldier, and later sergeant. With his Russian colleague, Egorov, on 30 April 1945, planted the Red flag on the Reichstag building in Berlin, signifying victory and the end of the war. Hero of the Soviet Union, 1946.
Accepted into the Communist Party, 1947.
