Melvin Jules Bukiet was born on August 21, 1953 in New York, United States. Son of Joseph and Rose Bukiet.

Education

Bukiet graduated from Sarah Lawrence College with the B.A. degree in 1974 and from Columbia University with the M.F.A. degree in 1976.

Career

Melvin worked as a writing teacher at Mt. Vernon Public Library (1983) and at The Writer’s Voice (1988-1993). He has served as a fiction editor at Tikkun, New York City since 1992. He has also been a visiting professor at Sarah Lawrence College, Bronxville, New York (since 1993) and at Columbia University, New York (1996).

Achievements

• He won the Edward Lewis Wallant Award for best Jewish-American fiction in 1992. Bukiet was named a National Jewish Book Award Finalist in 1993. He was also named to the National Book Critics’ Circle Recommended Reading List in 1995.
