Bukiet graduated from Sarah Lawrence College with the B.A. degree in 1974 and from Columbia University with the M.F.A. degree in 1976.
Melvin worked as a writing teacher at Mt. Vernon Public Library (1983) and at The Writer’s Voice (1988-1993). He has served as a fiction editor at Tikkun, New York City since 1992. He has also been a visiting professor at Sarah Lawrence College, Bronxville, New York (since 1993) and at Columbia University, New York (1996).
Bukiet is an adherent of Libertarianism.
