Chairman Council of Ministers, 1976-1992. Secretary general Workers' Party Ethiopia, 1984-1991. President Peoples Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, 1987-1992.

Chairman National Committee for Center Planning. Now in exile, Zimbabwe. Convicted of genocide in absentia, 2007.
