Merton Stacher Rice was one of America's greatest preachers. Referred to as "Preacher Mike," Rice was pastor of the Metropolitan United Methodist Chuch in Detroit (his seventh pastorate) from 1913 until his death in 1943. He was born on September 5, 1872, in Ottawa, Kansas, the son of Review Cyrus R. and Lucy A. (McCormick) Rice. He died on March 17, 1943, in Detroit. His educational credentials were very impressive. During his career in the ministry, he was named one of America's 25 most influential preachers. It was said that "preaching was his occupaton, recreation, and hobby." A. Dale Northrup, in the book Detroit's Woodlawn Cemetery, wrote: "One of his most ambitious undertakings was that of a fund-raiser with his golden voice that brought in $446,000 of pledges in a single day for a new church that ended up costing $1.5 million and was built in 1926. The owner of one of Detroit's tallest commercial buildings praised Rice for building a more imposing structure than his own without a mortgage. The congregation, which totaled 1,200 when Dr. Rice arrived, grew to 6,770, the largest in the Methodist faith." Dr. Rice wrote numerous books, and he was a powerful preacher. Much of what one reads in this book of sermons -- The Advantage of a Handicap -- is still relevant today, once one puts aside differences due to technological advances and changed cultural viewpoints. Anyone who prepares and preaches sermons will benefit greatly from studying the sermons in this book, not only for their insights, but also for their style and structure. The average layperson, too -- seeking to bolster his or her faith -- will also enjoy these sermons from such a master preacher.
