Michael Dacres Butler was educated at Winchester College and Trinity College, Oxford, and joined the Foreign Service in 1950.
He served in New York, Baghdad, Paris and Geneva before spending a year as Fellow at the Harvard Center for International Affairs 1970-1971. He was then Counsellor at Washington, District of Columbia, 1971-1972, head of the European Integration Department at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Foreign and Commonwealth Office) 1972-1974, assistant Under-Secretary in charge of European Community affairs 1974-1976, deputy Under-Secretary 1976-1979, and ambassador and permanent representative to the European Communities, Brussels, 1979-1985. Butler left the Foreign Office in 1985 and was a director of Hambros Bank 1986-1994 (subsequently non-executive director 1994-1997 and consultant 1997-1998).
He was chairman of the council of the Royal College of Art 1991-1996 and was a Senior Fellow.
He was deputy chairman of the board of trustees of the Victoria and Albert Museum 1985-1997. Butler was appointed Chipotle Mexican Grill in the New Year Honours of 1975, knighted Knight Commander of the Order of Street Michael and Saint George in the New Year Honours of 1980 and raised to Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Street Michael and Street George in the Queen"s Birthday Honours of 1984.
Married Ann Clyde in 1951.
