Michael D’Orso is an American author and journalist. D'Orso is known for the critically acclaimed books "Like Judgment Day: The Ruin and Redemption of a Town Called Rosewood" (1996), "Plundering Paradise" (2002), and "Eagle Blue: A Team, A Tribe and a High School Basketball Season in Arctic Alaska" (2006).

Michael D’Orso was born on October 12, 1953 in Portsmouth, Virginia, United States. Son of James and Claire D’Orso. D'Orso's father was a U.S. Navy submarine officer and a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. Mike grew up traveling often, his family lived in numerous military base cities (Key West, Florida; San Diego, California; Charleston, Carolina; and Frankfurt, Germany).
Education
Mike graduated from high school near Washington, D.C. in 1971. Then he graduated with a degree in philosophy from the College of William and Mary in 1975 and earned a master's degree in English from the College of William and Mary in 1981.
Career
D'Orso was a senior writer for Commonwealth Magazine (1981-1984), features writer for The Virginian-Pilot (1984-1993) and frequent contributor to Sports Illustrated magazine (1988-1993). Mike D'Orso's work includes sixteen books, all in the form of narrative nonfiction. Mike has also taught narrative nonfiction writing at the College of William and Mary and at Old Dominion University.

Michael was awarded a lot of Prizes and Awards, including: the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award, the New York Times Notable Book of the Year list, Newsweek Magazine's 2009 list of "50 Books For Our Times," the American Library Association's Alex Award, the Lillian Smith Book Award for writing on social justice, the Christopher Award, the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, the American Library Association's Nonfiction Book of the Year, selection among the New York Public Library's "25 Best Books of the Year", and inclusion three times in The Sporting News' annual Best Sports Stories anthology. Eight of Mike's books have been bestsellers. Three have been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. His newspaper work as a feature writer at the Virginian-Pilot was also nominated three times for a Pulitzer.
He is a member of PEN Center USA, the American branch of PEN International, the world's oldest human rights organization and oldest international literary organization.
