Gill studied law at the University of Sydney and received a Bachelor of Laws degree. The university was founded in 1850 as Australia's first university and is the oldest in Australia and Oceania. From its early years it admitted students on academic merit rather than on religious or class grounds, a principle that distinguished it from the English universities of its day.
The university's law faculty developed later in its history, as faculties of law, medicine, and science were added in the 1880s and 1890s. Legal education at Sydney therefore formed part of a broader expansion of the university's professional faculties. Gill's law degree belongs to this tradition of professional legal training in New South Wales.
Career
Gill was admitted to the bar in Australia in 1970. He later worked as a partner of Phillips Fox, a law firm based in Sydney.
Phillips Fox had its origins in the Australian firm PD Phillips, which became Phillips Fox in 1985. In 2006 the firm entered an exclusive alliance with the global firm DLA Piper and adopted the name DLA Phillips Fox. In 2011 its Australian practice integrated with DLA Piper to form DLA Piper Australia.
