Michael Hallward began his career as the owner of the Haslemere Craft Group, in Surrey, England, but by 1940 he had relocated to the United States, where he opened Michael Hallward, Inc., in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1954, he became director of the New Bedford Industrial Development Commission, continuing there until 1959. His first and only book, The Enormous Leap of Alphonse Frog, was written for the juvenile market. He also contributed short stories to various magazines, and was a founding trustee and director of the American Design Institute.
Michael's second daughter was Hollywood actress Gloria Grahame, who began her career as Gloria Hallward, but took the stage name of her mother, Jean (McDougal) Grahame.
