(For Jewish deli devotees and DIY food fanatics alike, The...)
For Jewish deli devotees and DIY food fanatics alike, The Artisan Jewish Deli at Home is a must-have collection of over 100 recipes for creating timeless deli classics, modern twists on old ideas and innovations to shock your Old Country elders. Photographs, historical tidbits, reminiscences, and reference material round out the book, adding lively cultural context. Finally, fifty years after I started eating pastrami sandwiches and knishes at Wilshire’s Deli in Cedarhurst, Long Island, Nick Zukin and Michael C. Zusman have written a cookbook that allows delicatessen enthusiasts to make their favorite deli dishes at home. Making your own knishes? No problem. Rustle up your own pickles? Bring it on. Michael and Nick manage to make deli food simultaneously contemporary and timeless, which is no easy feat. If reading The Artisan Jewish Deli at Home doesn’t make you hungry, you’ve never rhapsodized over a pastrami sandwich or driven a hundred miles for a transcendent plate of latkes. If my grandmother, the greatest Jewish deli–style cook I’ve ever known, were alive she’d be kvelling over this book.” —Ed Levine, founder of Seriouseats.com “Michael and Nick’s handsome book brings some of your favorite deli recipes and memories into your home kitchen. Their pickles, knishes, and pastrami are just like you remember, only better!” —Joan Nathan, author of Jewish Cooking in America “Before you open this book, be sure to crack a window, because your house will soon reek of the glorious funk of delicatessen. The mouthwatering scent of baking bagels, bubbling soups, and steaming pickled meats will conquer every square inch of available air, bathing it all in a rich, delicious patina of schmaltz. Don’t be surprised if a sarcastic waiter named Abe appears in your kitchen. The Artisan Jewish Deli at Home will turn any house into a delicatessen worth its weight in knishes.” —David Sax, author of Save the Deli If you don’t happen to live near one of the new wave of artisan-style Jewish delis that have sprung up around North America over the last few years, not to worry. With this book, the world of Jewish deli, in all its unsubtle splendor—can be yours in the comfort (and privacy) of your own kitchen. And it’s not that hard. Really. On top of all the Jewish deli classics, The Artisan Jewish Deli at Home offers updates and new angles on the oldways that are bound to thrill the palates of a modern generation of eaters focused on quality ingredients and a lighter-handed approach to a traditionally heavy cuisine. The chapters are organized into: Starters and Sides; Soups and Salads; Eggs, Fish, and Dairy; Beef; Bagels, Bialys, and Breads; and Pastries, Desserts, and Drinks. The range of favorite recipes include: Crispy Potato Latkes with Chunky Ginger Applesauce; Summer Chicken Salad with Tomatoes, Cucumber and Cracklings; Wise Sons’ Chocolate Babka French Toast; Home Oven Pastrami; and Celery Soda. Added cultural context comes from quick-hitting interviews with Joan Nathan and other Jewish food luminaries; histories of a few deli stalwarts such as bagels and pastrami; and first-hand reports from within the walls of the authors’ favorite temples of modern Jewish gastronomy located across the country including: Mile End Delicatessen in New York City; Wise Sons Delicatessen in San Francisco; Kenny & Zuke's Delicatessen in Portland, OR; Stopsky's Delicatessan in Mercer Island, Washington; and Caplansky's Delicatessen in Toronto.

(Malcolm X's cultural rebirth--his improbable second comin...)
Malcolm X's cultural rebirth--his improbable second coming--brims with irony. The nineties are marked by intense and often angry debates about racial authenticity and "selling out," and the participants in these debates--from politicians to filmmakers to rap artists--often draw on Malcolm's scorching rebukes to such moves. Meanwhile, Malcolm's "X" is marketed in countless business endeavors and is stylishly branded on baseball hats and T-shirts sported by every age, race, and gender. But this rampant commercialization is only a small part of Malcolm's remarkable renaissance. One of the century's most complex black leaders, he is currently blazing a new path across contemporary popular culture, and has even seared the edges of an academy that once froze him out. Thirty years after his assassination, what is it about his life and words that speaks so powerfully to so many? In Making Malcolm, Michael Eric Dyson probes the myths and meanings of Malcolm X for our time. From Spike Lee's film biography to Eugene Wolfenstein's psychobiographical study, from hip-hop culture to gender and racial politics, Dyson cuts a critical swathe through both the idolization and the vicious caricatures that have undermined appreciation of Malcolm's greatest accomplishments. The book's first section offers a boldly original and penetrating analysis of the major trends in interpreting Malcolm's legacy since his death, and the fiercely competing interests and ideologies that have shaped these trends. From mainstream books to writings published by the independent black press, Dyson identifies and examines the different "Malcolms" who have emerged in popular and academic investigations of his life and career. With impassioned and compelling force, Dyson argues that Malcolm was too formidable a historic figure--the movements he led too variable and contradictory, the passion and intelligence he summoned too extraordinary and disconcerting--to be viewed through any narrow cultural prism. The second half of the book offers a fascinating exploration of Malcolm's relationship to a resurgent black nationalism, his influence on contemporary black filmmakers and musicians, and his use in progressive black politics. From sexism and gangsta rap to the painful predicament of black males, from the politics of black nationalism to the possibilities of race in the Age of Clinton, Dyson's trenchant and often inspiring analysis reveals how Malcolm's legacy continues to spur debate and action today. A rare and important book, Making Malcolm casts new light not only on the life and career of a seminal black leader, but on the aspirations and passions of the growing numbers who have seized on his life for insight and inspiration.

(In Bad Boy, renowned American artist Eric Fischl has writ...)
In Bad Boy, renowned American artist Eric Fischl has written a penetrating, often searing exploration of his coming of age as an artist, and his search for a fresh narrative style in the highly charged and competitive New York art world in the 1970s and 1980s. With such notorious and controversial paintings as Bad Boy and Sleepwalker, Fischl joined the front ranks of America artists, in a high-octane downtown art scene that included Andy Warhol, David Salle, Julian Schnabel, and others. It was a world of fashion, fame, cocaine and alcohol that for a time threatened to undermine all that Fischl had achieved. In an extraordinarily candid and revealing memoir, Fischl discusses the impact of his dysfunctional family on his art—his mother, an imaginative and tragic woman, was an alcoholic who ultimately took her own life. Following his years as a student at Cal Arts and teaching in Nova Scotia, he describes his early years in New York with the artist April Gornik, just as Wall Street money begins to encroach on the old gallery system and change the economics of the art world. Fischl rebelled against the conceptual and minimalist art that was in fashion at the time to paint compelling portraits of everyday people that captured the unspoken tensions in their lives. Still in his thirties, Eric became the subject of a major Vanity Fair interview, his canvases sold for as much as a million dollars, and The Whitney Museum mounted a major retrospective of his paintings. Bad Boy follows Fischl’s maturation both as an artist and sculptor, and his inevitable fall from grace as a new generation of artists takes center stage, and he is forced to grapple with his legacy and place among museums and collectors. Beautifully written, and as courageously revealing as his most provocative paintings, Bad Boy takes the reader on a roller coaster ride through the passion and politics of the art world as it has rarely been seen before.

"If you enjoy the quirkier side of nature, this book of strange but true tales is a must."—BBC Wildlife "This is a book about the ocean's marvels, mythical and realamong them the meter-long epaulette shark that does indeed walk."—New Scientist When you dive into the sea, do you ever wonder what's down there, beneath you, poised to take an inquisitive bite? Author of Jaws Peter Benchley and film director Steven Spielberg certainly did, for below the waves lies a world we neither see nor understand; an alien world where we are but the briefest of visitors. The Shark that Walks on Land uncovers tales of ancient and modern mariners, with stories of sea serpents, mermaids and mermen, sea dragons, and the true identity of the legendary kraken. But this book contains more than just a medley of maritime myths and mysteries for marine biologists; it celebrates wonderful discoveries by blending the unknown and the familiar in an entertaining miscellany of facts, figures, and anecdotes about the myriad creatures that inhabit the oceans. Along the way we meet the giants, the most dangerous, the oddballs, and the record breakers and the shark that really does walk on land! ( Astrophysics is often –with some justification – regard...)
Astrophysics is often –with some justification – regarded as incomprehensible without the use of higher mathematics. Consequently, many amateur astronomers miss out on some of the most fascinating aspects of the subject. Astrophysics Is Easy! cuts through the difficult mathematics and explains the basics of astrophysics in accessible terms. Using nothing more than plain arithmetic and simple examples, the workings of the universe are outlined in a straightforward yet detailed and easy-to-grasp manner. The original edition of the book was written over eight years ago, and in that time, advances in observational astronomy have led to new and significant changes to the theories of astrophysics. The new theories will be reflected in both the new and expanded chapters. A unique aspect of this book is that, for each topic under discussion, an observing list is included so that observers can actually see for themselves the concepts presented –stars of the spectral sequence, nebulae, galaxies, even black holes. The observing list has been revised and brought up-to-date in the Second Edition.

(Welcome crime readers, and friends, to the second issue o...)
Welcome crime readers, and friends, to the second issue of Goodfellas and Faces magazine. This issue features the late Chopper Read on the cover. Chopper was an international icon of the genre, a writer of great books, a big man with a big character. Michael Nesbitt was, and remains, a huge fan and we were delighted when he told us he had an unpublished interview to share with us. Upon reading it, we were shocked and thrilled at the same time. You'll find out why. This issue has two excellent guest pieces. The first, from Jason Allday, is about how he came to write his book, Junior. His story is part tragedy, part triumph, where he tells of how he found peace of mind in the unlikliest places, and with the unlikeliest people. Our second is a piece from Adams family associate Jimmy Tippet Jnr, and we think it's an excellent article on the changing trends in "gangster fashion" ... as well as a wee punt for a business venture a certain Terry Adams is involved in. James Forrest has delivered another excellent historical piece, on the life and crimes of Don Carlo Gambino and we have an excellent Michael Nesbitt article on Buller Ward. I delivered a piece on that great old geezer Walter Norval, and I spoke to Michael Mason, a guy who wears his love of gangland culture quite literally on his sleeve ... and his legs ... and anywhere else you can get a tattoo. Finally, we have two exceptional interviews, the first with a legend in the crime fighting business, CIA and FBI undercover officer Ronald M. FIno, and the second with boxer and hard bastard Scott Dixon. They are great pieces, wrapping up a great issue. We hope you enjoy it.

(Disappearing Acts is about how facts are disappeared, dis...)
Disappearing Acts is about how facts are disappeared, distorted, or ignored in order that we might arrive at some politically/socially popular but ultimately destructive conclusion. Disappearing Acts examines our current culture from a historical and common sense perspective and offers solutions for many problems previously thought to be intractable. From the reverence we reserve for our Founding Fathers to the estimable praise we lavish on the World War II generation (The Greatest American Generation), Disappearing Acts critically examines most of what is accepted as conventional wisdom in America and offers an alternate perspective. The book, in part, is an attempt to get America past the brain-dead sloganeering that currently defines our public discourse ('they hate us for our freedom') and seeks a higher level of fact-based (intellectual) cultural analysis. Considering where we, as Americans, are at this place in our history and the direction we are likely headed absent a sobering cultural analysis, this is one of the most important books written in quite some time.

This issue features exclusive extracts from Gordon Goody and Maurice O'Connor's new book, "How To Rob A Train", in which they reveal the identiy of the man the world calls The Ulsterman. It is an excellent tale, one which clears up a great mystery ... and yet leaves another hanging in the air. Don't miss this wonderful book. We feature our first serial killer story, that of Graham Young, the Monster of St Albans, who poisoned co-workers and friends and detailed the results in his journals. It is a gruesome tale, and we are grateful to the people at the St Albans Review and to the writer Paul Heslop for this dark, and violent story. Brian Anderson spoke to the team at the Glasgow Crime Research site, about their excellent online resource and the reasons they set it up. It is hard hitting, and straight to the point. Michael Nesbitt brings us another of his stunning interviews as he speaks to Mickey Francis, one time football hooligan and now author. It's a great story, and we look forward to the book. In a sensational contribution, Eddie Blundell talks us through the events at the Weeley Rock Festival, a story that has become the stuff of legend for crime followers in the UK. We also have a superb piece from former Colombo family solider Dominick Cicale, from his own book on life in the mob, a piece on the odd former head of the family, "Tony Green" Urso. Finally, we have our special piece on the Revenge of the Rats, three stories about mobsters who gave evidence for the state. Look out for Issue 4 early in the New Year, friends.

(Based on field notes made by Michael Covington throughout...)
Based on field notes made by Michael Covington throughout his career as an amateur astronomer, this guide covers both the traditional and novel approaches to studying the night sky. In addition to the more standard techniques, it discusses the latest modern resources available to today's astronomer, such as personal computers, the internet, and computerized telescopes. Covington includes practical advice on site selection and weather; detailed instructions for observing the Sun, Moon, planets, and deep-sky objects; and newer specialities such as satellite observing and the use of astronomical databases. Written to complement How to Use a Computerized Telescope, this book appeals to astronomers with more traditional equipment. Michael A. Covington is an associate research scientist at the University of Georgia. He is a computational linguist trained in the computer processing of human languages and the computer modeling of human logical reasoning, and a widely recognized expert on the Prolog programming language. He is the author of nine books including Dictionary of Computer and Internet Terms, Seventh Edition (Barron's, 2000), Astrophotography for the Amateur (Cambridge, 1999), PROLOG Programming in Depth (Simon & Schuster, 1996), Cambridge Eclipse Photography Guide (1993), and Syntactic Theory in the High Middle Ages (Cambridge, 1985). A senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Covington is a Contributing Editor to, and former "Q&A" columnist of Poptronics magazine.
