Ivanovitch was given a diploma in law from the University of Belgrade in 1961. Eleven years later he earned his Master of Business Administration degree from Columbia University. In 1976, Michael received a Master of Philosophy degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1977 from the same university.
Ivanovitch began his career as a research associate at European Institute of Columbia University in 1977. A year later he took the position of a professor at Columbia Business School, where he worked until 1988. Michael served as an international economist at Federal Reserve Bank of New York from 1978 to 1979.
In 1979, he became a principal administrator and senior economist at Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, where he served until 1989. Since 1989 Ivanovitch has been a president at MSI Global, Inc. He is an independent analyst focusing on world economy, geopolitics and investment strategy.
