Michael Kampen studied at the University of Minnesota where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1961. Later he studied at Tulane University and received a Master of Arts degree in 1964. He also attended the University of Pennsylvania and received a Doctor of Philosophy in 1969. Kampen studied at Yale University from 1970 to 1971.
Career
Michael Kampen started his career as a professor of art history at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He also taught art history at the University of Florida, Yale University, Salem College, and Philadelphia College of Art. Kampen was a member of the art history faculty at Arizona State University. He also worked as an archaeological researcher for museums. Michael Kampen published his first book, The Sculptures of El Tajin, Veracruz, Mexico, in 1972. He also wrote a book about the Religion of the Maya that was published in 1979.
