Michael Kampen started his career as a professor of art history at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He also taught art history at the University of Florida, Yale University, Salem College, and Philadelphia College of Art. Kampen was a member of the art history faculty at Arizona State University. He also worked as an archaeological researcher for museums. Michael Kampen published his first book, The Sculptures of El Tajin, Veracruz, Mexico, in 1972. He also wrote a book about the Religion of the Maya that was published in 1979.
