He was born on 25 May 1924 and educated at Harrow and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, from 1946 to 1955 he served in the Colonial Service in Nigeria.

Ordained in 1957 he was later Vicar of Sparkwell, a Canon Residentiary at Norwich Cathedral, Bishop of Dudley and finally Dean of Windsor. He retired in 1989. He died on 31 December 2011.
