(Almost 100 years after the Treaty of Versailles was signe...)
Almost 100 years after the Treaty of Versailles was signed, World War I continues to be badly understood and greatly oversimplified. Its enormous impact on the world in terms of international diplomacy and politics and the ways in which future military engagements would evolve, be fought, and ultimately get resolved have been ignored.

The Western Front, running from the Belgian coast in the north to the Swiss border in the south, was to prove the decisive battlefront of World War I. It was where Germany, France, and Great Britain concentrated their military might-and it was where many believed the war would be settled before Christmas 1914.

World War I might conjure up images of the trenches of the Western Front, but it was a far more complex conflict fought in a number of theatres: an air war, a war fought in the Balkans, Italy, Africa, Turkey, the Middle East, and also a naval war in the South Atlantic, South Pacific, and Indian Oceans. It truly was a global conflict.
