( Since its publication in East Berlin in 1977, Ideology ...)
Since its publication in East Berlin in 1977, Ideology of Adventure has provoked radio broadcasts in West Berlin and Paris and three conferences at European universities. The subject of major reviews in the German, French, and Italian press, Michael Nerlich's book astonished critics by the scope of its task--the attempt to grasp all of Western history as an interrelated event--and its comprehension of theoretical issues in philosophy, sociology, history, and literature, as well as the command of several languages. Nerlich's project is the Western notion of adventure--a demonstration of how historically different notions of adventure developed in close contact with the economic and political circumstances of the times. Ideology of Adventure questions the traditional bourgeois notion that human beings are by nature adventurers; instead, it posits adventure as a historical, rather than a universal, term, signifying different contents in different circumstances, sometimes used to advance the interests of classes, sometimes to impede them. "Adventure," in Nerlich's view, played the role of a key element--maybe the key element--in the history of Western European capitalistic societies. He examines a period of 650 years, focusing on the ideology of adventure at the French medieval court, the rise of the progressive ideology of adventure that characterized the emerging bourgeoisie, and the shift of this ideology, in England, to an aggressive and imperialist justification for exploitation. Nerlich goes on to depict the rise and development of the ideology of adventure in bourgeois France, touching also on Spain and Italy. Volume 1 carries Nerlich's account down to the late 17th century in England, and Volume 2, which begins in Augustan England, is primarily devoted to the 17th and 18th centuries in France.
