Michael Petrovich Potapnev is a Belarusian physician, immunologist, hematologist, and medical researcher known for research on cytokines, apoptosis in leukemia, pediatric oncology, transfusion medicine, mesenchymal stem-cell therapies, and platelet-derived plasma technologies.
Background
Michael Petrovich Potapnev was born on June 8, 1950, in Gomel, Belarus, into a family of employees. He completed secondary school in 1967 and entered Minsk State Medical Institute. During his student years he developed an interest in scientific work, which led to his first research appointment at the Research Institute of Tuberculosis.
Education
Potapnev completed his medical education at Minsk State Medical Institute, graduating in 1974. His subsequent scientific training developed through research work in immunology and hematology, particularly under the supervision of Nikolai N. Voytenko at the Research Institute of Hematology. He defended a candidate dissertation in medical sciences in 1987 on the conditions of production and biological activity of immunoregulatory lymphokines involved in interaction between human T and B lymphocytes. In 1996 he defended a doctoral dissertation in medical sciences on interleukin-2 and interleukin-2-activated human lymphoid cells and their immunomodulatory properties in vivo and in vitro. In July 2004 he received the academic title of professor in clinical medicine.
Career
Potapnev began his professional career as a junior research fellow at the Research Institute of Tuberculosis after completing his medical education. From 1976 to 1978 he served in the Armed Forces of the Soviet Union. In 1978 he joined the Research Institute of Hematology, where he advanced from junior research fellow to head of department while developing expertise in immunology under Nikolai N. Voytenko. From 1997 to 2004 he served as deputy director for research at the Republican Scientific and Practical Center for Pediatric Oncology and Hematology and completed a research internship at the U.S. National Cancer Institute in 1997–1998. From October 2004 through December 2011 he directed the Republican Scientific and Practical Center of Hematology and Transfusiology. In 2011–2012 he worked as a chief research fellow at the Republican Scientific and Practical Center for Transfusiology and Medical Biotechnologies. From 2013 to 2016 he was a chief research fellow in the research division of Belarusian State Medical University. Since March 2016 he has headed the Department of Cellular Biotechnology at the Republican Scientific and Practical Center for Transfusiology and Medical Biotechnologies. His research has addressed cytokine interactions with T and B lymphocytes and neutrophils, cytokine mechanisms of acute, chronic, and sterile inflammation, apoptosis of immune and leukemic cells, pediatric leukemia, hyperthermia and immunotherapy for solid tumors, blood donation and blood-component technologies, mesenchymal stem-cell therapy, regenerative medicine, and platelet-derived plasma preparations. He has also served as Belarus's chief freelance specialist in cellular biotechnology.
Achievements
Conducted influential research on cytokine interactions involving T and B lymphocytes and neutrophils, including cytokine mechanisms in acute, chronic, and sterile inflammation.
Advanced the study of apoptosis in immune cells and leukemic cells in children with acute leukemia, including laboratory approaches for evaluating spontaneous apoptosis.
Contributed to research on hyperthermia and immunotherapy for pediatric solid tumors.
Developed and investigated cellular therapies based on human mesenchymal stem cells and platelet-derived plasma preparations for regenerative medicine.
Authored more than 470 scientific works and supervised the preparation and defense of 11 candidate dissertations.
