Previously he was Chief Technology Officer of Spinnaker Networks. Spinnaker Network was sold to Netapp in 2004. Before Spinnaker, Michael worked at FORE Systems and co-founded Transarc in 1989 (acquired by International Business Machines Corporation in 1994).
Transarc commercialized the Andrew File System (AFS) that was originally developed at Carnegie Mellon.
Michael is a co-creator of Andrew File System (AFS). This is an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers annual award given for outstanding contributions to information storage systems
Michael holds 38 patents related to file systems design.
Michael is co-founder and Chief Technical Officer of Avere Systems, Incorporated, where he designed and oversaw the development of the Avere Operating system and the virtual cloud bursting software, the vFXT. He was recognized for his lifetime body of work and received the 2013 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Reynold B. Johnson Information Storage Systems Award.
