Sebek received his Doctor of Philosophy degree at Charles University in 1971.
Sebek served as a clinical psychologist at the National Health Institute, Prague, in 1971-1977 and in 1986-1991. He then became a researcher at the Child Psychiatric Clinic at Charles University in 1977-1985.
Sebek was an assistant professor at Second Faculty of Medicine at Charles University in 1991. He also served as a director of Psychoanalytic Institute in Prague in 1990-1999.
In 1995-1998 he served as a consultant at the Organ Transplantation Fund in Prague.
Sebek is a member of the Czech Society for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, the International Psychoanalytical Association, the International Association for History of Psychoanalysis, and the Czech Psychoanalytic Society.
Sebek married Jana Burková on December 14, 1973. They have two daughters, Kamila and Helena.
