Education
Michael Star studied at the University of Sydney, where he obtained the degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws. The university was founded in 1850 by an act of the New South Wales Parliament and was established as Australia's first university. Its founding principles were religious tolerance and the admission of students on academic merit, so that students were admitted regardless of religious belief and matriculated by passing an academic examination.
The university opened to students in 1852, and in the following year seven professorships were created, including one in law. This early legal teaching formed part of the institution's development during the decades before Star's studies. He was admitted to the bar in New South Wales in 1969. The name Kenneth Raphael is also associated with his university studies.
