Stratechuk was born on April 12, 1961 in New York City, New York, United States; the son of Oleg and Ruth Stratechuk.
Stratechuk began his musical training at an early age studying with his father, a professional violinist, composer, conductor and graduate of the Vienna Conservatory of Music. In 1984, he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Music Performance from Purchase College. Three years later Michael was given a Master of Fine Arts degree in Music Performance from Aaron Copland School of Music. In addition, he holds a Certificate of Orchestral Studies from the National Orchestral Association.
Stratechuk has been a freelance musician and violinist since 1984. Also since 1991, he has been a conductor and educator at Hunter College Campus Schools. Since 2003 Michael has been working as a conductor and artistic director of the Metropolitan Orchestra of New Jersey.
Stratechuk has performed with the New York Pops, New York Grand Opera, Brooklyn Philharmonic, Westfield Symphony, New Philharmonic of New Jersey and the Bermuda Symphony. He has performed or conducted on tours of Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and United Kingdom.
In New Jersey, he has conducted the Society of Musical Arts Orchestra, the Livingston Symphony and the Stratus Chamber Orchestra of which he is the founder. Stratechuk serves on the music faculty of Hunter College Campus Schools.
Stratechuk is a member of the Young Musicians Advisory Council for the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.
On October 20, 1984 Michael Stratechuk married Marie Celeste Leppanen. They have two children.
