For advanced undergraduate/graduate- level courses in Econometrics. This text surveys the theories, techniques (model-building and data collection), and applications of econometrics. It focuses on those aspects of econometrics that are of major importance to students and researchers interested in performing, evaluating, or understanding econometric studies in a variety of areas.

(Mathematical Optimization and Economic Theory provides a ...)
Mathematical Optimization and Economic Theory provides a self-contained introduction to and survey of mathematical programming and control techniques and their applications to static and dynamic problems in economics, respectively. It is distinctive in showing the unity of the various approaches to solving problems of constrained optimization that all stem back directly or indirectly to the method of Lagrange multipliers. In the 30 years since its initial publication, there have been many more applications of these mathematical techniques in economics, as well as some advances in the mathematics of programming and control. Nevertheless, the basic techniques remain the same today as when the book was originally published. Thus, it continues to be useful not only to its original audience of advanced undergraduate and graduate students in economics, but also to mathematicians and other researchers who are interested in learning about the applications of the mathematics of optimization to economics.

The common theme running through my work has been the development of models using the analytic approaches of decision theory, control theory, game theory,
and econometrics in order to analyse, predict and control aspects of some of the fundamental problems of our economy and society, including technical change, individual structure, health care delivery, and arms races and arms control. In particular, my principal contributions are in four fields:
Economic Theory and Mathematical Economics: Early contributions were in applications of control theory to economics, including optimal savings, regional allocations of investment, and allocation of scientific effort. My advanced text (Book Number.
1) discusses programming and control theory and their applications in economics. Later contributions were to generalised comparative statics, probabilistic social choice and the Nash bargaining problem.
Econometrics: Early contributions were in estimation of embodied technical change and productivity, while later work involved the specification and estimation of econometric models of industrial organisations and alcoholism. My advanced text (Book Number.
5) treats econometric techniques of estimation but also such pre-estimation issues as the uses of estimated econometric models for structural analysis, forecasting and policy evaluation.
Health Economics: Early contributions were as a member of a team involved in estimating a microsimulation model of the health care system in the United States. Later contributions involved an analysis of the major policy issues in the economics of health care in the United States.
Strategy Arms and Control: Early contributions involved the development of models of arms races and strategy in a missile war, while later work involved analysis of the strategy of an arms race, arms control, nuclear proliferation, strategic arms limitation treaties, and the outbreak of war.
In addition, he was a Senior Fellow at the Milken Institute in Santa Monica, a Senior Fellow of the Gorbachev Foundation of North America in Boston, a Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Science, and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Married Devrie Shapiro. Children: Kenneth, James, William, Robert.
