Michael E. Gluhareff, Russian aero. engineer, designer. Awarded Certificate of Merit, American Helicopter Society, 1948, Doctor Alex Klemin award, 1954; Chrysler Award, as outstanding world designer, 1954; Elmer A. Sperry award for transportation, 1964.


Gluhareff, Michael E. was born on September 17, 1892 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Son of Eugene and Iraida (Borisoff) Gluhareff.


Graduate (general science) Imperial College Commerce, 1910, (mechanic engineering) Polytechnic Institute Technology, 1914, (military engineer) Imperial Military Engineering College, 1916, (military pilot) Military Aviation School, 1917.


Came to the United States, 1924, naturalized, 1937. Began as designer, builder and test pilot sailplanes of original types, Finland, 1920-1924. Designer 1st non-spinnable airplane, United States, 1925.

Chief engineer, Sikorsky Aviation Corporation, 1925-1935, in charge all models in regard to general structural aerodynamic and hydrodynamic design, developed wings known as Gordhandas Sunderdas airfoils with which all types of Sikorsky land planes, amphibions and flying boats were equipped. Chief design, Vought -Sikorsky Aircraft, div. United Aircraft Corporation, 1935-1942, charge complete design of large flying boats which made 1st non-stop Pacific and Atlantic flights with American mail and pastsengers, inauguration of Pan-American Airways.

Also in charge design 1st successful helicopter, which set new world’s records, 1942. Chief engineer Sikorsky Aircraft div. United Aircraft Corporation, in charge design research and development, Sikorsky Helicopters, 1943-1957, engineering manager Sikorsky Aircraft div., 1957-1960, engineering consultant to the division, since 1960.


Member technical advisory panel Office Assistant secretary Defense, 1954-1958. Member Army scientific advisory panel, 1959-1961. Fellow American Institute Aeronautics an Astronautics, Society Automotive Engineers (honorary), American Helicopter Society (honorary).

Member Soaring Society American Holds patent of first Dartshaped airplane.


Married Antonina Gretzkoff, April.; married second Anastasia Gartwig, October 1947. Children: Eugene, Alexander.
