The study which follows was done as a dissertation for a Doctor of Philosophy at Rutgers University and has been revised to include certain materials which were excluded from the original for a variety of reasons. Many respondents completed a fairly lengthy questionnaire on book selection and censorship, and this research is vital to the content of this book. Once the author's preliminary examination of currently available resources had been completed, an extensive reading program in the areas of censorship and intellectual freedom was undertaken. Whenever a library became involved in a censorship controversy, the literature seemed to indicate that it was more than likely that the sexual content of the challenged item was being questioned. At about this time, "The Report of the Commission on Obscenity and Pornography" was published. This report, and the further research by Mary L. Eakin and John J. Farley, made it possible to narrow the scope of this dissertation from censorship in general to the opinions of librarians concerning literature with sexual characteristics.
