Information Collection Rule Data Analysis provides the first compiled and analyzed Information Collection Rule (ICR) data to water utilities, scientists, consulting engineers, and educators. The Information Collection Rule represents the largest and most carefully managed effort ever undertaken in the United States to gather water quality and treatment information. The ICR was designed to give the US Environmental Protection Agency nationwide information characterizing water quality, treatment practices, and the occurrence of waterborne pathogens and DBPs. The range of information collected under the ICR exceeded that of any previous study or survey; 500 treatment plants in the US and Puerto Rico collected source water occurrence data on bacteria, protozoa, viruses, total organic carbon, total organic halogen, bromide, and general water quality parameters, such as calcium hardness, total hardness, temperature, alkalinity, and pH. Information gathered on treatment processes included operating data such as flow rates, chemical dosages, recycle and return flows, and water quality characteristics of recycle water. In addition, the ICR required some utilities to conduct pilot-scale or bench-scale studies to evaluate the effectiveness of using granular activated carbon or membrane technology to remove DBP precursors.
