As a jazz drummer, Stephans has performed and recorded with artists including Dave Liebman, Bennie Maupin, Joe Lovano, Bob Brookmeyer, Don Menza, and Alan Broadbent. Stephans" first solo recording, Om ShalOM, was critically lauded in 2007 by United Kingdom critic Tom Barlow as an album of the year in the December 2007 – January 2008 issue of Jazzwise. In addition to his performance activities, Stephans has received multiple composition grants from the National Endowment for the Arts.
In 1974, this association afforded him the opportunity to write the large ensemble composition "Shapes and Visions" for vibraphonist Karl Berger, which was performed at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington, District of Columbia As a poet and writer, Michael"s work has been published in literary journals such as The Note, and Inscape Magazine.
In 2000, he was awarded the Rachael Sherwood Poetry Prize by the department of English at Cal State Northridge. Stephans is also the author of the non-fiction music guide Experiencing Jazz: A Listener’s Companion, published in 2013 by Scarecrow Press.
Stephans has been an adjunct music professor at Pasadena City College and University of Miami. Currently, he is a faculty member in residence at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, where he teaches writing.
