Career
Born in , County , O'Brien first excelled at Gaelic games in his youth. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of nineteen when he first linked up with the senior team before later joining the junior hurling side. He made his senior debut during the 1942 championship.
He was an All-Ireland runner-up on two occasions. At club level he was a six-time championship medallist with. O'Brien retired from inter-county football following the conclusion of the 1955 championship.
