Sandoz studied at the University of Geneva, where he earned a licence (Lie.) qualification. The institution was founded in 1559 by John Calvin and Théodore de Bèze as the Academy of Geneva, a seminary intended to educate pastors and to serve as a center of public education in Protestant Geneva.
Over the following centuries, natural sciences, law, and philosophy were added to the curriculum, and a medical faculty was established in the nineteenth century. In 1873 the university dropped its religious affiliations and became officially secular, a change that shaped its character in the period when Sandoz was educated and later practised.
Sandoz was admitted to the bar in Geneva in 1952. The Geneva bar association is a private-law body that represents the legal profession in Geneva and represents Geneva lawyers in Switzerland and abroad.
He subsequently worked as a partner of Sandoz, Moreillon & Reymond, a law practice based in Geneva, Switzerland. His career therefore unfolded within the Geneva legal profession, in the same city where he had completed his university studies.
