Michele G. Melaragno was born on October 25, 1928, in Rome, Lazio, Italy. He was the son of Attilio and Amelia (Castaldi) Melaragno.
Melaragno graduated from the University of Bari, receiving his doctorate in civil engineering in 1959.
Melaragno started his career as a structural engineer at Keys Associates in Providence, Rhode Island in 1960. From 1963 to 1966, he was a city engineer and then became an assistant professor of architecture and building sciences at Kansas State University. Subsequently, Melaragnoo went to Clemson University, where he held the position of an associate professor of architecture and building sciences till 1974.
Since 1974 and till his retirement, Melaragno held the position of professor of architecture and building sciences at the University of North Carolina and also worked as a civil engineer in private practice.
Michele Melaragno was best known as a civil engineer with more than forty years of experience, during which he has written a number of works on architecture, including Simplified Truss Design, Wind in Architectural and Environmental Design, Dictionary of Units of Measurement, Quantification in Science: The VNR Dictionary of Engineering Units and Measures, An Introduction to Shell Structures: The Art and Science of Vaulting, On Two Wheels: A Strategy of Survival for the Affluent and the Poor, Monumento Sotto Accusa: Monuments on Trial, From the Blind Point of View, Buildings of Charlotte, and Severe Storm Engineering for Structural Design.

1991Melaragno was a member of the International Association of Shell and Spatial Structures (and Structural Morphology Group), National Society of Professional Engineers, American Institute of Architects, American Meteorological Society, American Association of University Professors, American Federation of Teachers, American Institute of Planners and Kansas Academy of Science.
During his life, Melaragno was married two times. His first wife’s name was Helen, with whom he got divorced. He then married for the second time. His second wife’s name was Deborah. The couple had 3 children: Patricia, Elizabeth, and Mark.
