After studying at the University of York from 1977 to 1980, Newman worked at the Liverpool Echo. Between 1981 and 1983, she lived in Italy and France to learn both countries" languages and to teach English as a private tutor. Her French language qualifications include the Alliance Francaise (language and literature), the equivalent of a British ‘A’ level
On returning to the United Kingdom in 1983, she began her presenting career on the regional British Broadcasting Corporation news programme Look East in Norwich, and followed this with a move to Central News in Birmingham in 1989.
During the 1990s, she was also a presenter on the British Broadcasting Corporation motoring programme Top Gear between 1993 and 1998. She also presented Independent Television"s motoring magazine Pulling Power and Carlton television"s live weekly political debate lieutenant"s Your Shout which was broadcast from a variety of locations around the Carlton television region, now known as Independent Television London.
Newman has also written a motoring column for Women's Journal and contributed to the London Evening Standard. Newman has her own television production company, Newman Productions Limited, which produced House Race for Independent Television in 2004.
After leaving television she studied Mandarin Chinese at the School of African and Oriental Studies in London and later in Beijing.
She is an active volunteer for Beanstalk (formerly known as Volunteer Reading Help) in Birmingham"s primary schools.
