Professor of Theoretical Philosophy, 1947, and then Philosophy, 1968, University of Genoa.
Sciacca took from Gentile the notion that concrete being is act not fact and, influenced by Plato, Augustine and Blondel. he arrived at the notion ol the philosophy of‘integration’ in which all forms of being and existence are grounded in the subject. Sciacca, having affirmed the primacy of existence, now seeks critically to recover the nature of being. He denies the existentialist contention that existence can be a nothingness and asserts its concrete reality in its search for its proper nature, which he calls ‘objective inferiority’. Any attempt to found our existence on ourselves alone is doomed to failure. We must posit ourselves with reference to what transcends us and the immanent ground of our being is a transcendent God. The consequences of this for human action and for future life are explored in Morte e immortalita (1956) and La liberta e il tempo (1965).
