Huneven was born August 14, 1953, in a Jewish family in Altadena, California, United States.
Michelle attended Iowa Writers Workshop and received Master of Fine Arts (creative writing).
Huneven's first novel, Round Rock was published in 1997. Reviews of Round Rock were generally positive. A Publishers Weekly reviewer called it a “delightful, bittersweet first novel,” and praised Huneven as having “a gift for rendering grownup characters who keep growing up credibly (and quickly) before our eyes.” Similarly, Valerie Miner noted in the Los Angeles Times Book Review that Huneven “introduces readers to this tight, fractious community as if they were newcomers, free to form their own fresh allegiances.”
She authored Jamesland in 2003, it is set in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles. Her third novel was Blame (2009), the fourth - Off Course, was published in April 2014.
Huneven has worked as a restaurant critic and food writer for the LA Weekly and the LA Times. Her food journalism has also been published in The New York Times, O, Gourmet, Food and Wine, and other publications. She teaches creative writing at UCLA and at Occidental College.
Michelle Huneven is known primarily as the author of four popular novels. Her first two books, Round Rock and Jamesland, were both New York Times notable books and also finalists for the LA Times Book Award. The third novel, Blame, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and also a finalist for the LA Times Book Award. The fourth novel is Off Course.
