Michi Tagami was born in 1753. She was the eldest daughter of Yoshinaga Tagami, a retainer of Nagato (Choshu) Clan. Originally named Michi Tagami.

In the course of her travels Michi Tagami met the noted haiku poet Sankyo at Mino Province (Gifu Prefecture) and became his disciple.
Michi Tagami devoted herself to composing poetry while continuing her never-ending pilgrimage.
Michi Tagami married a farmer named Koresuke Murata (1768) but was rendered a widow (1776). After her husband’s death she entered a monastery and shortly after set out on a pilgrimage around Kanto and Ou districts.
