Background

Soldier. Marquis. Born in Kagoshima Prefecture. He fought in the civil war of he Meiji Restoration (1868), participat­ing in many battles in Northern Japan. Also saw action in the campaign against Takamori Saigo's rebellion (1877). Com­manded the First Army in the Sino Japanese War (1894-95). Was made a full general (1895). After the war he was ar­pointed a member of the M1htary Council. In the Russo-Japanese War (1904-05), he commanded the Fourth Army. Was ap­pointed a field marshal (1906) and later made a Marquis.

Shizuo Nozu, another noted soldier, was his elder brother.
