He hails from Castlecomer, Company Kilkenny.
Mick Dowling’s competitive record is outstanding. He boxed 50 times in the green vest of Ireland including the 1968 and 1972 Olympic Games in Mexico City and Munich respectively.
He boxed in the Bantamweight (54 kg) division.
In the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, Dowling found himself within touching distance of at least bronze only to be edged out on a split decision by Orlando Martínez in the quarter-finals. Dowling is also the proud owner of 2 European Bronze Medals (from 1969 and 1971) and still holds the record for 8 consecutive National Elite titles in the same weight division.
He has 9 National titles in total from the Irish Amateur Boxing Association. His knowledge of the sport is second to none.
He is currently senior coach of the Mount Tallant Boxing Club and Institute of Technology, Tallaght"s Boxing Squadron
Mick has also trained the Leinster Rugby squad in the art of Boxing Conditioning. Mick Dowling is now a well-known boxing commentator and fight analyst. He works primarily with Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ Sport) in their coverage of Irish amateur boxing including the IABA National Championships, European Amateur Boxing Championships, World Amateur Boxing Championships and the Olympic Games.
Mick Dowling owns and runs Mick Dowling Sortsworld based in Terenure, Dublin 6W. lieutenant is long established as one of Ireland’s leading sports shops specializing in top quality sports gear, including running shoes and boxing equipment.
Mick has taken part in numerous events in aid of charity. One of the most recent was a Boxing-night for Down Syndrome Dublin.
Mick"s son Mark Dowling is also a professional sportsman - a cyclist. As a junior Triathlete he finished 4th in the National Senior Championships and continued to beat the best seniors in Ireland.
He finished 4th in The National 1500m.
He is now a professional cyclist with an excellent record making him one of the elite Irish cyclists on the circuit. This was preceded by a very successful event in France where he finished his international debut in France just over two minutes down on the Kreiz Breizh Elite race general classification and in the top five climbers, ranking as the best Irish rider. Mick"s daughter Lisa owns and runs Evolve and Exercise, a fitness centre based in Kimmage, Dublin which rund a range of pilates, boxing conditioning and personal fitness training.
